ICFS presents CINEMA OTHER: Films from the American Genre Film Archive
Takeshi Miike’s AUDITION
AUDITION turns 20 this year, yet it still has the power to profoundly shock. Patrons have famously fainted, thrown-up and walked out in droves, yet there’s no denying that this is the work of an artist at the top of his game. Unfolding like a sweet, gentle love story, lonely widower Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), is urged by his son – and a film-producer friend – to begin dating again. Though initially reluctant, he agrees to participate in his friends unethical scheme to set-up phony casting calls for young actress-hopefuls, the true purpose of which are merely to allow Aoyama to “audition” potential mates. Transfixed by the thoughtful and reserved Asami (popular model, Eihi Shiina), Aoyama pursues a relationship with her, but soon begins to wonder if she is all that she presented herself to be? An investigation into her past leads to gradually increases tension, leading to an extremely intense harrowing climax. You have been warned! As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, comfy couches and dangerous drink specials! Rated R for violence/torture and sexuality. 113 minutes.
