The first euro western or spaghetti western that pops into people’s minds when you mention the words bleak or nihilistic is probably The Great Silence or maybe this. Face to Face and A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die are good contenders. A definitive example of tragedy. A simple familar plot of warring land barons. This is a stage where the good guys are bad guys and the bad guys are good guys as a result of bad timing, circumstances and misunderstanding. Standing in for the snow of Great Silence is the desert and a ghost town that looks more post nuclear apocalyptic than boom town at the end of its life. Once again we have a beautiful transfer from Arrow Video. Some might find it lacking in extras compared to other Euro Western treatments by Arrow. But the ones here were enough for me. I won’t delve into the history of the film’s star and maestro, Richard Hossein, cause we would be here quite a while. 😁 We’ll just say he was good friends with Sergio Leone.
