Inspired by the international success of the Dollars trilogy, and dedicated to director Sergio Leone, Cemetery Without Crosses offers a Gallic spin on the Spaghetti Western formula thanks to its star and creator, Robert Hossein (best-known to English-speaking audiences for his role in Jules Dassin's Rififi). After her husband is lynched by bandits, Michele Mercier (Mario Bava's Black Sabbath) seeks revenge and turns to an old friend, played by Hossein, for help. A solitary figure who lives in a ghost town and dons a single black glove before each gunfight, Hossein is initially reluctant but soon infiltrates the widow's enemies to force a showdown. Cemetery Without Crosses is a darker breed of Western, bleak and melancholy in tone amid the explosive set pieces. It also boasts an outstanding score by composer Andre Hossein (father of Robert) and the catchiest of themes, sung by cult figure Scott Walker.

The first euro western or spaghetti western that pops into people’s minds when you mention the words bleak or nihilistic is probably The Great Silence or maybe this. Face to Face and A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die are good contenders. A definitive example of tragedy. A simple familar plot of warring land barons. This is a stage where the good guys are bad guys and the bad guys are good guys as a result of bad timing, circumstances and misunderstanding. Standing in for the snow of Great Silence is the desert and a ghost town that looks more post nuclear apocalyptic than boom town at the end of its life. Once again we have a beautiful transfer from Arrow Video. Some might find it lacking in extras compared to other Euro Western treatments by Arrow. But the ones here were enough for me. I won’t delve into the history of the film’s star and maestro, Richard Hossein, cause we would be here quite a while. 😁 We’ll just say he was good friends with Sergio Leone.
